per leggere la versione italiana)
Since 1993, Sassi have been declared UNESCO World Heritage.
They are symbol of a peasant life but also a wonderful example of
Urban Architecture, in fact all the houses are carved into the
calcareous rock.
Our
Tour starts in the Sasso Caveoso, and in particular in
Malve and Casalnuovo quarters, two of the oldest areas in
the Sassi.
During the Tour, it will be possible to see different things:
• Casa Grotta, typical cave – dwelling dated back on
the XVIII century A.C., that show you how the farmers lived until
1956. This House and that way of life was represented by Carlo
Levi in his book Cristo si è fermato ad Eboli (Jesus
Christ stops at Eboli)
• A typical wine – cellar, totally excavated in the
rock that show you how they produced the wine
• The system of the water canalization. In the Sassi
there were no aqueducts until 1927, for this reason people created
different cisterns that were very important to catch much rain for
their necessities.
• The Natural Cave, excavated by the nature and not
by man activity.
At
the end of the Tour it will be possible to see all the places of the
movie directed by
Mel Gibson: The Passion of the Christ.
SIC
offers its guided services in different languages:
italian, english, french, german
and
spanish
and
can book restaurants and hotels for individuals or groups.
This Travel Agency wants to cooperate with the local productive
resources to improve Matera and her cultural aspect.
If
you want you can continue the guided Tour in the afternoon:
Another important thing to visit is the Cathedral. It stands
on a rise overlooking the two valleys of the Sassi. It is an
outstanding example of Romanesque – Apulian architecture. The
frescoes are from the school of Naples. Very interesting is the
elaborate Stone Nativity (1534) sculptured by the artist Altobello
Persio from Montescaglioso. The Cathedral of Matera represents the
perfect blend of art and faith. The former representing the best
expression of man’s skills. The Tour goes on the Centre of the
City where there’s a beautiful landscape of the Sasso
Barisano, the new part of the Sassi, the part that is already
restored.
In
the Centre there will be the guided tour of different places like
the Hypogeums, probably was an underground Convent and
through it is possible to reach the Sasso Barisano.
The
Tour finishes with the Murgia Plateau:
It
is located in front of the Sassi and represents the Palaeolithic
and Neolithic age. In fact here is possible to find different
caves. This territory is very interesting for its morphology, for
this reason an intense monastic movement found between the 8th and
13th century A.C. their ideal habitat to built monasteries and
convents.
